Gun Repair and Servicing

The vast majority of repairs are carried out in our own workshop in Winchester. Some specialist work, such as re-blacking and engraving, has to be sent out to various out-workers within the gun trade.

B.E.Chaplin has been making & repairing guns since 1932 our speciality is the servicing, repair and renovation of best quality British guns (from re-stocking to re-barrelling), we are able to undertake every type of repair to all makes of sporting gun, whether it be a side by side or over and under shotgun, a rifle or even an air rifle.

Bespoke Guns:

Although we build far fewer guns to order these days, we have built an average of 2-3 guns per year since 1955. We have, in the past, built several guns for the late Lord Rank at Sutton Scotney, who was a long-standing customer of ours, as we have for many other prominent Hampshire landowners. We have also supplied guns for many of our valued American customers who have come to Hampshire in the shooting season. In the past we have also built large calibre rifles for the London trade and for several years produced some of the revered "Lloyd" bolt-action rifles for the late David Lloyd.

Re-Stocking:

We hold a large number of best quality French and Turkish walnut stock blanks, and are usually able to offer our customers a choice should their guns require re-stocking This also enables us to successfully match the figure of the existing stock when replacing one of a pair.

Gun Fitting:

A fitting can be arranged by appointment with our Managing Director, Laurie Hart, who conducts every fitting session personally, both here at Winchester and at Shalden Shooting School in North Devon, where he holds fitting days once a month throughout the summer, in conjunction with the proprietor, Rod Brammer. Laurie is an accomplished shot who has been shooting for over forty years. All alterations are carried out in our own workshop.

A well-fitting gun is a vital factor in enabling you to shoot to your full potential. It enables you to simply look at the target and shoot without making any distracting adjustments, as the gun will be pointing exactly where you are looking.

It is no accident that all the best shots take great care to ensure their guns fit them perfectly.
